New life at Calvary: A church renewed for Gospel and community

Calvary Church in Grimsby has undergone a remarkable transformation in just a few short months, becoming a warm, welcoming and vibrant hub for both church life and community outreach, and a place from which the Gospel is clearly being shared with the local community.

Since taking on the building in October, One Church Grimsby has invested significant time, energy and resources into bringing new life to the space. With the support of CGT, including the installation of a new boiler, one of the first priorities was ensuring the building was warm and usable for all who gathered there. From there, an extensive programme of improvements followed.

Key works included reconnecting the gas supply and relocating the meter, alongside essential electrical upgrades and new emergency lighting. The building was fully refreshed with new herringbone flooring, redecoration, updated furnishings and window dressings, while additions such as a new kitchen setup, sound system and media kiosk have supported both hospitality and worship.

The team also created welcoming, purpose-built spaces including a coffee bar with wooden cladding, a children’s play area and a dedicated prayer and ministry room. Outside, the transformation continued with repainting of the building exterior, new signage, landscaping, and the removal of barbed wire to create a more open and inviting environment.

This work has been made possible through the dedication of the whole church, with volunteers contributing their skills and many hours of service. The result is a building now in constant use throughout the week. Alongside Sunday services and growing children’s ministry, the church hosts Bible studies, discipleship groups, a warm space, toddler groups, baby first aid classes, art and craft sessions, and community coffee gatherings.

Special events have also drawn in the wider community, including a full Easter service featuring the EAGA Gospel Choir, who have appeared on the TV programme Britain’s Got Talent. The event opened the doors to many new visitors, both in person and online.

Looking ahead, the church hopes to expand its outreach further with initiatives such as healthy food classes, summer barbecues, and community-focused events.

The Trustees of One Church Grimsby said:

Art & craft sessions

“We are incredibly thankful to CGT for the opportunity to grow One Church and strengthen our outreach into the local community. It has already become a real blessing to many people, with new believers joining us and a range of outreach programmes now taking place. Truly, it is becoming a House of Miracles, and we pray that everyone who enters the building will experience the goodness of God and the love of the church family. We give all glory to God for all that He is doing here.” Emily Glancy, Marco Humphrey and Wendy Hawkins, Trustees of One Church Grimsby

Jonathan Bennett, CGT Property Manager, added:

“It has been a real privilege to see the transformation at Calvary Church in such a short space of time. The dedication of the team, combined with God’s provision, has created a space that is not only renewed but is clearly being used to share the Gospel and serve the local community.”

This is a powerful example of what can happen when vision, partnership and faith come together for God’s glory.
